Taming Newsletter Overload: Get Your Inbox Back

Newsletters are the best writing on the internet stuck in the worst reading app. Move them out of your email and actually enjoy them.

Somewhere along the way, the best independent writing on the internet moved into email newsletters. That is great for writers — and quietly terrible for readers, because your email inbox is the single worst place to read anything.

Email is a to-do list, not a library

Your inbox is where obligations live: invoices, meeting invites, password resets. Dropping a 3,000-word essay in the middle of that turns reading into another chore, competing for attention with everything urgent. Most newsletters get skimmed in 20 seconds or archived unread.

Separate the reading from the email

  • Route newsletters out of your inbox — into a folder, a dedicated address, or a reading app.
  • Batch them: read newsletters in one or two sittings a week instead of as they arrive.
  • Unsubscribe ruthlessly from anything you have skipped three times in a row.

Read them like articles, not emails

A newsletter is just an article delivered by email. It deserves the same treatment: a clean reader view, your preferred font, highlights for the parts worth keeping, and an archive when you are done. Many newsletters also publish an RSS feed, which skips email entirely.

ReadHiiv pulls your reading — articles, RSS feeds, and newsletters — into one distraction-free space, so your inbox can go back to being an inbox.
